Officer
Greg Gilmore was hired by the City of Canton Police Department on
August 23rd, 1999 and assigned to the Patrol Division.
In 2007
after attending The Canton Police K-9 Training Class #18 with K-9
Buford, Greg was re-assigned to the K-9 Unit. and is also currently
assigned to the Canton PD S.W.A.T. team.
Officer Gilmore was born
& raised in Canton, Ohio where he began his career in law
enforcement with the Stark County Sheriff's Office until committing
his duties to the City of Canton.
On
August 01, 2005
while working an off-duty "extra job" as security for a local bank, Greg thwarted two armed gunmen from an attempted bank
robbery by shooting and wounding one of the men outside the bank after
repeatedly ordering the men to drop their weapons. Greg's quick actions
that day earned him "The Canton Police Officer of the Year" award as
well as a departmental Combat Cross Medal.
The wounded gunman was taken into custody, tried and convicted
& was sentenced to 25 1/2 years in prison.
The
second suspect, fled the scene on foot and at gun point, "car jacked" a
vehicle from a local resident and continued his flight. Two days later,
the suspect was taken into custody and was also tried, and convicted
receiving a 33 1/2 year prison sentence.
